Riverside Christian School was founded in 1905 with the purpose of bringing Christian education to the mountains of Southeastern Kentucky. Today, its purpose remains the same: to serve the community by providing quality education for grades K-12 from a distinctly Christian viewpoint. Students who attend Riverside can expect a positive learning environment where all are treated as individuals; with dignity and respect. Because of the small class sizes, teachers are able to get to know each student personally, and can work with each student based on his/her own learning style. The advantages of Christian schooling go far beyond the classroom setting. Riverside offers unique service opportunities for students and parents. We encourage students to dedicate themselves to their community, country, and world through multiple service opportunities. Riverside also offers a number of excellent resources including a top of the line library, updated electronics, and competitive college preparatory curriculum.

Our Motto: A Light in the Hills

Jesus said: “You are the world’s light–a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light! Let it shine for all, let your good deeds glow for all to see, so that they will praise our Heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:14-16 LB)

Our Creed

Jesus said: “You are the world’s light–a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light! Let it shine for all, let your good deeds glow for all to see, so that they will praise our Heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:14-16 LB)

We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible authoritative word of God.

We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His Virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.

We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful man regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.

We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.

We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.

We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Riverside School Song – by Mother Ada Drushal

Riverside School Song

1.  There’s a pleasant little valley,
By a quiet and peaceful stream,
That is loved by men and maidens far and wide,
And ’tis there amid the mountains,
In the little valley green,
Stands the school we love the best, dear Riverside.

As old Troublesome doth glide past our dear Riverside,
It reminds us that our lives speed quickly on,
So we’ll labor while we may and improve each passing day,
For our days at Riverside will soon be gone.

2.  Hark, we hear the old bell calling,
Duty’s call we must obey,
Tho its chimes fall now on many a thoughtless ear,
Hours of sweetest joys pass quickest,
Let us cherish while we may,
All that’s ours now to bless each coming year.

3.  In the years of life before us,
There will come full many a day,
When both duty’s call and pleasures seem so strong,

When tempted and discouraged,
Our Christ will send a ray,
That will light our feet away from paths of wrong.

Academic Excellence

Riverside follows Kentucky state educational guidelines and uses both Christian-based and secular curriculum materials.

Teachers challenge students to become spiritually mature, to be responsible, and to work to become the best that they can be physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.

With solid academic and Christian training and an emphasis on becoming active, responsible citizens, Riverside’s graduates continue to contribute to their communities.  Many continue their education, either in a technical trade or to become professionals in fields of business, communication, computer science, human services, education, Christian ministry, and medicine.  Some serve their country in the military.

Riverside continues to add technology-based learning to our classes.  Recently a grant enabled us to provide most of our classrooms with smooth boards, a technology similar to the popular smart boards.

We have a computer and video production lab, as well as having several computers for student use in the library and most classrooms.

Development of Individual Talents

Students are encouraged to develop their individual talents in a variety of ways, through participation in student council, sports programs, Lower Lights, or Christians In Action.

Other opportunities include extra piano or guitar lessons, drama and video production classes, publication of student poetry, competing in ACSI, WCTU, conservation, Win with Wood, and Heritage Fair competitions, chapel participation, and being on the yearbook and Beacon staff.  Special Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter programs involve student talent.  The annual talent show at the end of the year provides a showcase for some of these talents.
